Nature view

Here you can read about my views on nature and our relationship with animals.

Animals should be respected for what they are, not what we can turn them into. Each species is a unique interim end product of a million-year evolutionary process and we cannot afford to let them disappear due to our own greed.

Every animal, big or small, has an amazing story to tell, as long as we understand their biology.

Every species has a value in itself. They shouldn’t be valued in terms of what they can bring to humans. We need to stop thinking of nature as a luxury item that we only take care of if we have the energy to do so. We are part of nature ourselves and depend on it in every way.

I think we all have a need to have nature around us. It’s not something we think about on a daily basis because it goes without saying. Of course, there’s a reason why we go to the woods or the beach when we go for a walk, or why we acquire live animals or have potted plants in the window. It’s because we have a basic need to have something living around us.

I don’t believe in any “god”. But I believe in the enormous power of nature – not as a being that means us good or bad, but as a force that is far greater than us and is the driving force behind everything that happens. A force we need to respect. A force we are just a tiny part of.

And by extension, my thoughts that I have often thought when I have sat in the Alps with my daughters and looked out over the mountains: Nice to think that no matter what happens to us, no matter what we do to nature, the mountains will remain. All other things being equal, they will still be there in hundreds of thousands of years, even millions of years – long after we humans have disappeared from the planet.
