The role of zoos in the past, present and future
Zoos have undergone a remarkable evolution. From the first menageries, where exotic animals were displayed for entertainment, until today where zoos play a central role in conservation, research and education. But what does this mean in practice and what role will zoos play in the future?
In this talk, Bengt Holst draws on his 37 years of experience at Copenhagen Zoo to give a unique insight into how zoos have become part of the global effort to protect endangered species. He explains how modern zoos work together internationally to ensure genetic diversity and prevent species extinction. He also sheds light on the ethical dilemmas that come with keeping animals in captivity and how we can best balance animal welfare with conservation goals.
This lecture provides a unique insight into:
- The story behind zoos’ evolution from menageries to conservation centers
